A Race Against Time: How MCFR Saved a Pregnant Woman from a Sinking Car

January 14, 2024 · MCFRLive

Early one morning in 2024, near the Interstate 95 Gatlin Boulevard exit in Stuart, a car left the roadway and sank into a pond beside the highway. Inside was a pregnant woman. What happened next would showcase the very best of Martin County Fire Rescue.

A Bystander Steps In

The 911 call had barely been processed when Martin County Fire Rescue crews arrived on scene. But they weren't the first to reach the sinking car. A Sebastian man named Logan Hayes had already jumped into the frigid water, swam to the vehicle, and pulled the pregnant driver to safety.

Hayes' quick thinking gave the woman a chance. Without his immediate action, the outcome could have been devastating. But even the bravest bystander needs backup. That's where MCFR came in.

When Training Meets Need

MCFR paramedics arrived within minutes and found a situation that demanded both medical expertise and operational coordination. The woman had serious injuries. She was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. But there was more to be done.

Fire rescue divers entered the water to confirm no one else was in the vehicle. It was a critical step — each year, vehicles that enter water can trap multiple occupants. Confirming the car was empty wasn't just procedure. It was peace of mind for a community that would have been devastated by a hidden second casualty.

Later that same day, we learned the woman had delivered her baby. Both mother and child survived.

The Importance of Water Rescue Capability

Martin County is bordered by water in every direction. From the St. Lucie Inlet to the Indian River Lagoon, from retention ponds to the waterways alongside our highways, water is everywhere in our community. When accidents happen, MCFR's water rescue capabilities save lives.

This incident on I-95 near Stuart is a perfect example. The water was cold enough to cause hypothermia. The car was sinking fast enough that minutes mattered. And a pregnant woman's life hung in the balance. Under those conditions, only professional rescue teams with proper training, equipment, and coordination could have achieved this outcome.

Our Community's Guardian Angels

The morning Logan Hayes jumped into that pond, he became a hero. But heroes need support. Martin County Fire Rescue gave this story the ending it deserved — providing the medical care, the dive team confirmation, and the ongoing commitment to the woman and her family.

Thank you to every member of MCFR who makes our community safer. Stuart, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Palm City, Indiantown, and every corner of Martin County: we sleep better at night knowing you're there.
